Yeringberg Shiraz 2021

Our Shiraz (with a splash of Viognier) is a wine that continues to demonstrate the affinity of the variety with the Yarra Valley. We have three different Shiraz clones in the vineyard, PT23, 1654 and ‘100 year old’ clones, each with a unique flavour profile and ripening pattern.

Tasting Notes

From the outset, the nose offers a lively, lifted array of aromas - blueberry, violet, black pepper, liquorice and bay leaf. The palate, fresh and energetic, is both perfumed and delicate but then also supple, fleshy and generous. The underlying depth and savoury, structured richness that drives the finish is quietly there now, and over the next 10 or more years it will come to the fore.

Vintage Notes

2021 was a dream vintage for all of our varieties. A cool start with plenty of rain in the spring with flowering enjoying the best of the weather, thus ensuring ideal yields, much better than the tiny 2020 season.

Winemaking Notes

We have three different Shiraz clones in the vineyard, PT23, 1654 and ‘100 year old’ clones, each with a unique flavour profile and ripening pattern. As a result, we chose to pick our 2021 Shiraz fruit on four different days over early March. As usual, we used several different fermentation styles...100% whole bunch, destemmed whole berries and destemmed / crushed berries. The very small Viognier component is added at the crusher. The resulting batches were pressed after between 11 and 20 days on skins and then matured in barrel (28% new) for 19 months with several clarification rackings along the way.
